News of the disaster spread quickly from intercepted wireless signals, but was initially upbeat, reporting that ships were hastening to the rescue and even towing Titanic to safety. Relatives gathered at White Star offices desperate for news of their loved ones.
Eventually, on the 17th April, lists of names of those saved were displayed outside, but even these were not wholly accurate and were subject to alterations – offering a glimmer of hope to those who had still heard nothing.
Relief funds were quickly established to help dependants and relatives of those lost.
